CALL FOR ARTISTS & ART

HAYTER ART CAPER 2022

MAXtivity, a Philomath Oregon non-profit art and creative space is excited to announce our 2022 New Years Eve fundraiser, The Hayter Art Caper – a live-action role-playing mystery adventure and art auction created and produced by our friends at RemarkableArts and Conundrum House and held in the beautiful Benton County Historical Museum – Philomath Museum location.

This is a juried selection. Individual artists are asked to submit up to three works, through our online application at https://forms.gle/AZzLxWW99DpssEa69.

There are TWO calls for this event – one is for contemporary art created by Willamette Valley artists (we will send that out a bit later); and the second – this call – is for art created “in the style of” a selection of artists from WWII era of modern European artists.

STORY BACKGROUND

The original story of the Hayter Art Caper was inspired by Elmer & Berta Hader, two very talented people who met in their twenties, fell in love, married, and merged their artistic talents.  Their career as a duo of talented children’s book illustrators and authors spanned 50 years, during some of the most traumatic and transformative events in our global history. Together the couple produced thousands of pieces of art, scores of children’s books (including Caldecott medal and Honors), and hundreds of fine art paintings.

Our caper, an historical fiction tale, takes the players on a journey through 50 years of political, cultural and artistic adventures that wrap up in an unexpected conclusion at evening’s end.

The core story revolves around the artistic and social life of the Haders, who (in THIS story) seem to have ties to the murky underworld of art forgeries and thefts!

And of course, nothing is EVER as it seems. 😉

THE SETTING IS AN ART AUCTION. Although the unfolding story is historical fiction, much of it is based on documented facts, AND the art auction is REAL – the art offered is in fact for sale at the event.  You receive 50% of the winning bid for your artwork.

Your Mission, Should You Be Chosen & Accept It…

This call is for art to be created “in the style of” a selection of artists from WWII era Europe. The specific styles of work were labeled by the Nazi regime, Degenerate Art. Visit this Wikipedia page to get a sense of who were these artists and the schools they represented: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degenerate_art

We are seeking one artist to create a specifically designed artwork in the style of Piet Mondrian – this is perhaps the most critical piece in terms of the mystery to be solved during the evening of the NYE event.

We would like to have at least another 3 pieces created in the style of any of the other “degenerate” artists, with a preference for Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler, Jacoba van Heemskerck, and Pablo Picasso.

Those 3 pieces will contain other clues that you will work into the resulting artworks.

Once we are satisfied we have artists chosen to create those 4 pieces in process, we will welcome other work created in the style of any of the artists in the list, including the first 4: Mondrian, Lohse-Wächtler, van Heemskerck or Pablo Picasso.
